On Monday and Tuesday, December 3rd and 4th, students in Mr. Georgsson’s Seventh Grade Business Education classroom took part in what has been dubbed “the largest educational event in history”.

Hour of Code is an initiative to get students to spend an hour of time learning to program, as part of national Computer Science Education Week (December 3-7, 2018).  The Hour of Code is a global movement by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries through a one-hour introduction to computer science and computer programming.

The hour of code activity in Mr. Georgsson’s classroom had students create their own digital dance party!  Amazon and Code.org partnered for this year’s Hour of Code as part of Amazon’s Future Engineer program, a comprehensive kindergarten-to-career program that works to inspire, educate, and train 10 million children and young adults each year from underrepresented communities to pursue careers in the fast-growing field of computer science.

Right from the start, students were very engaged due to the integration of trendy music and a fun theme that had everyone bobbing their heads to the music and mimicking their sprites as they danced in the play space on their screens.  Each explored a series of steps while they were exposed to increasingly challenging programming concepts.  Each step would build upon the previous one until students had the knowledge necessary to complete their “Dance Party” at the end of the exercise.  The final stage involved students testing their programs and mimicking the dances on their screens.

At the end of the programming phase, students walked around the room and enjoyed each other’s creations!  At the end of the activity, students gave enthusiastic reviews asking for more activities of the same vein.

ShowStoppers is Cab Calloway School of the Arts yearly extravaganza, where Middle and High School Arts classes demonstrate why our school is truly a school of the arts. Since 1999, Cab has had an overarching theme attached to the performances, this year’s theme is ‘Mythos’; a recurrent narrative theme or a set of beliefs or assumptions.

This year’s ShowStoppers attendees will see and hear performances dealing with women empowerment, the planets as gods, Shakespeare’s Macbeth, zombies, universal truths, storytelling, addiction to caffeine and, of course, the Spirit of Cab Calloway is featured during the ‘Minnie the Moocher’ finale.

Cheer for your favorite performer but be prepared to be overwhelmed by every act in ShowStoppers 2018!

Cab Calloway SOTA welcomes several NYC arts professionals conducting workshops before Winter Break

Plans are to make this a permanent series for Cab students!

Cab Calloway School of the Arts is having a master class series with some of the top professional artists and teachers in the business. The classes are coordinated by recent Wilmington transplant and former Broadway performer, Christopher Davis. Two years ago, Mr. Davis brought in the national tour of Kinky Boots to the Cab dance department.

Things kick off Friday, November 30th with Eddie Rabon of Take 3 Talent Agency of New York City. One of his specialties is booking young talent for Broadway and television, name a NY-based television show and he’s booked a client on it. Mr. Rabon will observe and speak with Marjorie Eldreth’s Musical Theatre class, followed by a school assembly at 12:25 pm where Mr. Rabon will discuss preparing for auditions and what he’s looking for when representing a client, Mr. Rabon hopes that this will be one of many visits to Cab Calloway.

On December 3rd, we will send in the clowns with Matt Baker, featured clown for Cirque du Soleils’s Quidam. Mr. Baker will teach the Cirque technique in three of Brendan Moser’s Theatre classes. The technique is called ‘jeaux’ technique and is used in auditions and training for Cirque and other modern circus acts. Mr. Baker says that while his work doesn’t take on Chekov or Ibsen, it’s a spirited, lighthearted representation of identifiable human truths with a touch of whimsy.

December 17th, the dance department will welcome Tome’ Cousin, currently a dance professor at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh and a dance supervisor for Tony Award winning director/choreographer and Wilmington native, Susan Stroman. Mr. Cousin oversees casting, teaching and supervision of Mrs. Stroman’s shows nationally and internationally in addition to his work as a director/choreographer for Carnegie-Mellon and Point Park University productions. Mr. Cousin will teach both the middle and high school dance departments throughout the day.

The series will continue after the winter break with plans being finalized for Broadway conductors, singers, musicians, hair and wig supervisors, wardrobe supervisors, prop masters and specialists in audio and visual technologies, in addition to dancers from top international companies.  Future plans are to make this a yearly series for the students of Cab Calloway School of the Arts.
