MIDDLE SCHOOL VISUAL ARTS ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
There are two required sections for applying to the Middle School Visual Arts Program. Part one is a 30 minute in person drawing assessment and part two is submitting an online portfolio.

Part 1:
In person drawing assessment: Students will spend 30 minutes drawing a still life in person at Cab Calloway School of the Arts. All materials will be provided and the still life will be set up in advance by the faculty. You will be contacted via email with a time and date for the in person assessment. (Students can bring their own pencils if desired)
Part 2:
Online Portfolio Information: The works and ideas represented should be your own, completed by your hand only, and not taken from published or online sources. Do not work from reference photographs from the internet! No anime drawings accepted. Please review the grading rubric for more detailed information: Middle School Assessment Rubric
Formatting
- All images must be submitted as .jpg files. NO .heic files will be accepted. You may use a free file converter online to change from .heic to .jpg: Cloud Convert.
- All images must be well lit, and rotated appropriately. Photos may be cropped and rotated using the free online program Photopea.com.
**Please note that portfolios are due digitally by the date and time of your in-person assessment.
Required Artwork for Portfolio
- Still life: At least three everyday objects, grouped together with a lightsource, and drawn from observation (do NOT use a photo!). This file must be submitted using the following format: Firstname.Lastname.Stilllife.jpg
- Landscape Drawing: One artwork of a landscape drawn from life, not a photograph. This file must be submitted in the following format: Firstname.Lastname.Landscape.jpg
- Self-portrait: A drawing of your own face, using a mirror from observation (do NOT use a photo!).You may also include neck and shoulders. This file must be submitted using the following format: Firstname.Lastname.Selfportrait.jpg
- Reference for Portrait Shading
- Choice Artwork: An artwork of the student’s choice. This piece may be a 3-dimensional work, painting, drawing, etc. Anime drawings or other fan art of any kind will not be accepted. This file must be submitted using the following format: Firstname.Lastname.Choice.jpg
